A chip pan fire in a Bedford high rise blocks has been averted by a sprinkler system.
Bedford High Rise Fire
The fire started on the fifth floor of the building in a kitchen. Firefighters were dispatched in the evening after a fire alarm was automatically raised. After the crew had forced entry to the building, they found that the sprinkler system had automatically activated and successfully extinguished the fire. A woman suffering from the effects of smoke inhalation was escorted to the hospital.
Local station commander Derek Hobbs praised the sprinkler system. He said: ‘This shows the benefit of having a fire alarm in your property. It can alert you and your neighbours of a fire. It also shows the benefit of sprinkler systems in high-rise buildings. By the time we arrived, only six minutes after the call, the fire had already been extinguished by the sprinkler system.’
He added that: ‘This incident highlights the dangers of cooking with hot oil in chip pans. Never leave cooking unattended. If possible, change your chip pan for a thermostat-controlled deep fat fryer that runs on electricity. They allow oil to become hot enough to cook the food but not hot enough to self-ignite. Never leave your cooking unattended and if you do leave the kitchen, switch off all your cooking to prevent it catching fire.’
