Fire safety issues have been discovered in the basement of the John Green Building, a high-rise building after a fire broke out meaning the Bradford tenants were unable to return home.
Bradford Tenants Cannot Return Home Due To Fire Safety Issues
The local fire and rescue service was called to the scene on Bolton Road on Monday 6th June. They discovered two cars on fire in the building’s car park. The West Yorkshire Fire Authority condemned the John Green Building the same night after discovering a number of fire safety defects. This resulting in the property being evacuated of its residents who were put into temporary accommodation by Bradford Council. They are not allowed to return to their homes until the landlord of the high-rise has addressed all of the fire safety issues that were discovered.
The prohibition notice issued to the landlord says that there are “insufficient measures to reduce the risks of fire and the spread of fire on the premises.”
The issues that need to be addressed include ensuring that all of the flats’ doors are capable of providing adequate fire resistance, that more robust measures are put in place to prevent the build-up of combustible materials within escape routes, and that the building’s emergency lighting must be working and always functional.
Chris Kemp, the Senior Fire Protection Manager at West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: “The safety of people is our number one concern. Although this was a relatively small fire, the fact that it was in a high-rise residential building that already had fire safety concerns meant the potential was there for something more serious to happen. This is why we had to take immediate action.”
