Fire Safety Issues in Student Accommodation
Out of the 80 homes that were found to be falling below the legal standards, 45 of them had one or more major fire safety problems, and 22 had other, less serious safety issues.
Cardiff Councillor Norma Mackie said, “We have seen properties in extremely poor condition that young people are living in and paying good money to live in. The owners of the accommodation make a lot of money whilst not taking the care they should do.
Fire Safety Issues in Cardiff
Fire safety issues were right at the top of the list of hazards in Cardiff’s HMOs. Fire safety was followed by damp, electrical hazards and the risk of structural collapse.
A spokesperson for Cardiff Council said, “The council works with private landowners or estate agents to ensure that the property being rented is fit for purpose and any remedial action which is required is carried out, or the matter is then passed to court for prosecution. Prohibition orders are put in place if the rental property is unfit for human habitation.”
