Blackburn Millennium Wireless Fire Alarm Systems
We can help support your legacy EDA Blackburn Millennium wireless fire alarm system
The Millennium wireless fire alarm system was manufactured by Electro Detectors. The Blackburn Millennium wireless fire alarm systems superseded the A-Series fire alarm in 1997 and had a much-improved speed, a more fault tolerant network and it quickly became a world leader in radio fire alarm systems.
Along with a series of sophisticated test modes, a simple setup procedure and long battery life for its sensors, it offered the largest capacity in radio systems. This led to its use in some large landmark sites, for example, Sandhurst College.
Electro Detectors Wireless Fire Alarm Systems
The Millennium wireless fire alarm system was the first addressable wireless fire alarm system from Electro Detectors. The Millennium system was far more advanced than its predecessor, with a fully addressable system and an enhanced processor. This increased processing power allowed the system’s designers to increase the number of devices is supported by a factor of three.
The Millennium Series came in two configurations, the M100 and the M200. The larger, the M100 was capable of handling some 3,000 devices across a hundred zones, whereas the smaller M200 could interface with up to 999 devices across twenty detection zones.
IMPORTANT UPDATE – Millennium Wireless Fire Alarm Systems
From 2011, it has no longer been possible to use the Millennium system in new installations. It is now only supported by approved Electro Detectors distributors such as RV Fire Systems. In 2021, the manufacturer will completely stop support for the Millenium system. They now recommend upgrading to the Zerio Plus range, a new EN54 part 25 (EN54-25) compliant alternative.
EDA was not permitted to manufacture new items and put them onto the fire safety marketplace unless they are third-party certified to the new EU regulations. The official advice to fire alarm system installers is that any extensions to Millennium or Zerio systems have to be done using new fully compliant equipment, although it can still be linked to the original system. The Zerio Plus range is a direct replacement for the older, non-compliant Millennium and Zerio systems. The need for change is that when the EN54 part 25 standard became law, the frequency that EDA systems were using needed to be changed to comply; so it was necessary to design and produce a whole new model range.
It is worth noting that if you are replacing an existing fire alarm system, it can be relatively straightforward as the base plates of the new Zerio Plus system are fully compatible with the older models. The new devices can simply be plugged into the existing bases that are mounted on your ceilings. The fire alarm panel network itself will have to be resurveyed and upgrading to meet the new frequency requirements of the system. The Fire Industry Association (FIA) has announced that if existing devices that are not compliant with the EN54 part 25 legislation are being replaced, then it is acceptable to do so provided that you use ‘like for like’ replacements: the new devices must function to exactly the same specifications as those units being replaced.
Please note that EDA will still continue to supply spares and maintain existing Millennium systems for at least ten years from the date that the new EN54 part 25 standards came into force. EDA will, therefore, continue to produce spare parts for both the Millennium and Zerio systems until the 31st of March 2021 after which support will likely cease. EDA will then continue to supply spare batteries for both systems for another five years, until March the 31st 2026.
